Five each day. The posh ones, always crave Mahogany, shiny as a fresh dinner plate. The poor Prefer cardboard. Ornate wreaths and flowers And pricey tears for accompaniment cannot stave Off weeds, weedy minds overpower alien matter. All that deep calligraphy. Loving oohs and ahs Our dearest, most beloved, etched etcetera. Visitors are few. In the great democracy of neglect Family clans sift through wills eager to forget. But the soul remains a puzzle. What can be made Of fierce persistent regret. Can sorrow save? One man, a repeat visitor, brings no flowers. Eyes shine like soaked pebbles. Makes his move, Takes in all sides, stoops over the crypt, ‘kneeling prayerfully low quietly spits.’
