My greatest pleasure is to bring a cyclist down, those arrogant bastards who ride roughshod over the land, not thinking of its gentle surfaces, skidding and scuffing up tracks, eroding soil and forming ruts. Mountain bike riders are worst, thinking they can handle any terrain with thick tires and low gearing. They ride cross country, trampling tender vegetation underfoot, with a wanton destruction of fauna splattered beneath their wheels. I am the land’s revenge, my smooth surface well disguised as a hard bottom, fine grains deceptive when tightly packed. I ambush the unwary rider speeding along a nondescript stretch or down a sharp slope. Their tire sinks into my trap as I grip and wrestle the wheel out of their control. I throw them down, fracture wrist or ribs, gash knees, helmet or not, concuss their heads. You who continue to ride despite my warnings, remember — I lie in wait for you.
