Conversation with my Grandmother

Duncan Wu

You shot members of the Kuomintang point blank,
strangled traitors, fought in the Guangzhou rising
of ’27. You rose in rank,
commanded a Red Guard squad comprising

the best. You swept through buildings like a ghost,
through oneiric cityscapes, slaughtering
enemy agents. Five decades on, your most
important duty, while watering

the amaranth on the roof of your hotel,
was to speak in English a sentence then
unclear but which I recall and which compels
me as it echoes now: “Listen to me: when

time comes for me to vanish, disappear,
remember this—you’ll find me now, back here.”
